Monitor for Gum Disease If You Show These Risk Factors

Posted .

Gum disease, which may be the most common dental ailment we treat, impacts about half of the total number of adults in the U.S. While a big part of what causes gum disease comes down to which food choices we make, there are also lots of risk factors that you should be aware of. Here are some you can review.

The most obvious factor that will make you vulnerable for gum disease is poor oral hygiene. If you are not brushing your teeth twice per day and flossing at least once a day (and coming into our office normally), the debris left in your oral cavity after you consume a meal will break down and lead to gum disease. Ensure you’re brushing twice daily! If you smoke or chew tobacco, you will be at an increased risk for gum disease. For many reasons, including higher-than-usual amounts of food intake, pregnant women are at an enlarged risk for gum disease. Other risk factors for gum disease include diabetes and certain types of medications which mitigate the amount of saliva development.
